Pisa

The city is located a few kilometers from the mouth of the river Arno, in a flat area called the Lower Valdarno. Pisa was one of the four Maritime Republics, and now houses the most important airport in the Region, the "Galileo Galilei" which also has direct intercontinental flights, and is home to three of the most important universities in Italy, the University of Pisa, the Scuola Normale Superiore and the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna.

 

In the famous Piazza del Duomo, World Heritage Site since 1987 and poetically called Piazza dei Miracoli, there is the Cathedral built between 1063 and 1118, in Pisan Romanesque style. In the square it stands also the Leaning Tower, in fact, a twelfth-century bell tower, 56 meters high, which acquired its characteristic tilt ten years after the start of its construction, thus becoming one of the most famous Italian monuments in the world.
