San Gimignano

North of Certaldo is the town of San Gimignano whose rich historical, cultural and natural heritage is protected by the UNESCO. With its beautiful monuments and stone- or cotto-paved streets San Gimignano gives the impression of being still in I4th century ! The Duomo, dates back to Romanic times and contains several precious frescos of the Florentine School: the Palazzo del Popolo features a tower that was erected in the 14th century. It is one of the most important monuments in San Gimignano and houses the Civic Museum. There is also the Etruscan Museum and the Rocca di Montestaffiolo a fortress with only one remaining turret from where the towers of the historical center can be glimpsed.

A curiosity: San Gimignano is famous for its quality agricultural products, particularly saffron which has been cultivated in the area since Medieval times.
