Hotel Certaldo Toscana

The story of the mill

The story of the Certaldo mill dates back to the 16th century when it was used to grind wheat.
The mill which at the time belonged to the Florentine Cavalcanti family, was seized with other property by Cosimo I De’ Medici after he rose to power in 1537.
Around 1570 the property was transferred to the Noble Order of the “Cavalieri di Santo Stefano” of Pisa. It was even then a building of considerable importance provided as it was with as many as five millstones.

During the restoration of the mill and the construction of the Hotel Certaldo, several historical findings came to light which are now exhibited at a museum specially devoted to the age-old “Mulino di Certaldo” and which illustrate its operation.
Today the building has become a beautiful four-star hotel, carefully restructured to maintain the tradition of its glorious past intact thus bringing an important piece of Certaldo history back to life.
